Why having a secure WiFi password is SO important

Many people think a simple password makes life easier, or perhaps because they are in a rural setting with neighbours out of sight they are safe to keep their Wi-Fi network open.  Reality is, external WiFi  antennas can be easily purchased which allow strangers to access your wireless signal over a Kilometer away! This may not seem like a big deal, but we urge you to consider the below reasons why having a secure WiFi password is SO important:

1)  An open WiFi router, a router with a weak password, or voluntarily sharing your router’s password can allow others to do illegal things that can be traced with you.  For example, if somebody parked near your house using your WiFi signal from their car to access child pornography, the authorities will be placing YOU under arrest.  The defense of a WiFi breach has been ruled inadmissible in many courtrooms.

2)  Outsiders can use your WiFi to engage in cyber-attacks, or to hack into others’ computers and accounts.  Again, the activity will register as happening inside your home and legally tied to your account.

3)  A sophisticated hacker can access the computers in your home and make them repositories and servers for child porn, stolen credit card numbers, etc.  You would not even know this was happening in many cases.

4)  Access to your home network enables outsiders to actually see what web pages and other content you are looking at, including sensitive information such as online banking.

You should use WPA authentication, never WEP which can be easily breached.  WPA passwords can be 8-63 characters. Feel free to contact us with any questions.
