As part of the upgrades introduced here, our business customers will need to transition to new public IP addresses in order for us to be able to offer redundancy via our new fibre feed in Burford.
This is due to the current IP addresses being permanently bound to the Brantford fibre feed. In the event there is an issue with that feed and our network biases over to the Burford feed, anybody on the current addresses wouldn’t be able to take advantage of this fail-over, and would be without connectivity until the Brantford feed has been restored. These new public IPs are part of a block awarded to Silo directly from ARIN (American Registry for Internet Numbers). The good news is that this block now belongs to Silo Wireless, meaning whatever the future may hold for our network’s architecture these new IP addresses will stay with us and can be used with any feed, so this should be the last transition necessary. Part of the conditions to receive this exclusive block is the return of our current address allocations, hence the firm deadline for transition.
If you have a public IP address and have not been linked to this article via an email from our support department, you will soon be contacted with a change-by-date. If you are not on a business package and don’t pay separately for a public IP address on top of your residential package you don’t need to make any changes. Our standard residential customers don’t need to update anything with their internal network in order to take advantage of the new Burford fail-over. All of these changes will happen behind the scenes and won’t have any impact on connectivity unless otherwise noted. We are planning one more overnight outage in order to solidify these network changes, and will announce the date and time once it has been set.
We truly appreciate the understanding and enthusiasm our customers have shown in regards to this significant upgrade. We are doing everything in our power to minimize any interruptions to our customer-base as we implement these changes, and once complete we will be able to offer greatly enhanced reliability and resilience in the event of network issues, whether they are on our network, or upstream on the Internet at large!
