We are proud to announce a $1.5 million investment to upgrade our 3.65 GHz deployment to new industry standard LTE technology!
Silo was an early adopter of Canada’s 3.65 GHz ‘lightly licensed’ wireless band when it was first introduced back in 2011. The introduction of this band was a big deal as it allowed service providers a new option to deliver non-line of sight connectivity to those who cannot see one of our towers, doing so by using higher broadcast power levels than existing unlicensed wireless bands allow.
Shortly after we obtained our license to operate we bid for and received a $600,000 government grant to fund the “Building Connected Communities” project, which was a joint effort between County of Brant, Ontario Ministry of Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), Six Nations Council, and Silo. This grant, combined with our own $1.4 million investment allowed us to install an extensive coverage network, leveraging the 3.65 GHz band using Motorola’s WiMAX platform, connecting 3700+ individuals and families in underserved communities in Brant County, Six Nations and beyond.
At the time, this equipment was state-of-the-art, but over 7 years of progress means that times have changed, and people require higher speeds than ever to support the needs of their homes and businesses today.
Throughout the years, Silo has continued to invest in alternate technologies and frequency bands alongside the 3.65 GHz WiMAX network. The 3700 customers originally serviced on this platform have been whittled down to approximately 1500. This means that these remaining customers are still limited to speeds of 6Mbps or less, which by today’s standards is simply not enough.
We are determined to provide these 1500 customers our next generation speeds, which is why we are proud to announce a $1.5 million investment to upgrade our 3.65 GHz deployment to new industry standard LTE technology, revitalizing our existing broadband offerings. We have been researching and trialling the different hardware options for months, and have strategically selected equipment vendors that are embraced by our nation’s leading carriers, ensuring top-tier reliability and performance.
Once complete, this exciting project will increase available speeds for these customers to up to 25Mbps. Existing customers aren’t the only people who stand to benefit from this expansion; the planned 3.65 GHz LTE network will also increase capacity throughout our coverage area, meaning many residents who have been waiting patiently for more capacity to open up on our towers will finally be able to join the Silo family and enjoy modern Internet connectivity alongside their neighbours.
