Three years ago, we embarked on our first ever fibre to the home project in Wilsonville, bringing world-class Internet connectivity to 111 households in need.
We’re happy to report that the project has proven to be a huge success, and that we have recently expanded fibre coverage down Jenkins Rd.
In early 2017, residents in Wilsonville were fed using our first-generation wireless equipment mounted on a small tower in the village. Instead of reinvesting in next-generation wireless gear and a taller tower, the decision was made to instead invest in the necessary infrastructure to deliver connectivity using fibre optic technology.
Residents who participated in the project not only gained access to Internet packages with speeds up to 100Mbps, and our tried and tested VoIP home phone service, but we also took this opportunity to trial our new Silo TV offering and residents have been very happy with the results.
In an article published in the Simcoe Reformer around that time, David Billington, a member of the community, said that he and his wife almost forewent purchasing their home in Wilsonville because they were afraid they wouldn’t get adequate Internet access.
“My wife is into website development, I’m involved in e-commerce, and our children are into virtual learning. For people like us, we need the Internet,” he said.
Fibre is a perfect fit for Wilsonville because wireless technologies struggled to reliably penetrate the dense tree cover in the community. We encouraged residents in Wilsonville to sign up for the service not only for the reliability, but also for the proven increase it will bring to the property value of their homes.
Having learned the ins and outs of successfully deploying a fibre to the home network, Silo plans to move into other communities using a similar model, with two new communities planned for 2019.
